Between 12 and 36 months old, the child perfects walking, gains greater control of his/her arms and hands, and learns to eat and to use the toilet independently. This need for movement and drive for exploration are the focal points of our Respect and Peace Toddler Communities.

During this stage, children learn how to be part of a classroom community; developing patience to wait their turn, learning to be respectful of others and their feelings, and becoming more social. There is also an increased emphasis on caring for themselves; dressing, toileting, hand washing, eating and blowing their noses. We observe an explosion of language at this stage and the ability to communicate clearly with others is a main focus of the Pre-Primary years.

As the child’s gross motor skills and coordination progress, her focus moves to increased fine motor capabilities. As she works with the materials that that have been prepared for her, you can observe her growing interest in the smallest of details. This increasing ability for more precise movements, along with increased focus and concentration are signs the child is ready to move into a Primary community.
